Vitamins are organic substances that are essential for life. Vitamins are found in food derived from both plants and animals.
Vitimins cannot be manufactured by our bodies, we obtain them only from our food or from supplements. Vitamin deficiency will lead to serious illnesses such as rickets ( Vitamin B ) or scurvy (Vitamin C ).
There are two kinds of Vitamins, water soluble and fat-soluble. The water-soluble Vitamins (e.g. C) are not stored in the body, they are excreted in urine. It is necessary to have a regular supply from the diet. Fat soluble Vitamins (e.g. Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K) are stored in the liver.
One of the problems associated with today's hectic lifestyle is that few of us eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables and need to supplement our diet with Vitamins. Browse here for a very complete list of vitamins from A and beyond.
